Local Channels in MPEG-4 HD on DirecTV starting today for New York and LA
It
seems DirecTV is getting the MPEG-4 AVC party started a little
early. We knew New York and LA were going to get local channels in high definition, but we thought it would take until
January, we were wrong. Starting today, both cities can enjoy their local programming via satellite as long as you have the right
equipment.Subscribers who already get their local channels in HD via MPEG-2 equipment don't worry, nothing has changed (yet) for you.
New York channels:
- WABC/Channel 7
- WNBC/ Channel 4
- WCBS/Channel 2
- WNYW (FOX)/Channel 5
- KABC/Channel 7
- KTTV (Fox)/Channel 11
- KCBS/Channel 2
- KNBC/ Channel 4

Wait, didn't these cities already have their feeds in HD? Weren't they just like, the two default east/west coast HD feeds for everyone who wanted network programming?

The original title was a little confusing, sorry, edited for clarity. They are now broadcasting in MPEG-4 instead of just MPEG-2

Yeah, I'm confused too. I've always been able to receive HD locals on 81, 83, 87 and 89. But I've talked to DirecTV a few times and they say I shouldn't be receiving the channels because I live in an area (Northridge, Los Angeles, California) that has over the air high definition. I even had someone else out to take a look at some problems I was having and he told me I couldn't receive HD, even though I was walking a college football game in HD on ABC 87 on my 61" TV. If you've ever watched football on a 61" TV, its REALLY easy to tell the difference between HD and SD. So what gives? Are they wrong or am I? Also, I don't need to do anything with my system to receive the new channels, right? I have the HD Tivo and don't want them to take it from me!

So is anyone recieving these feeds? Is there a noticeable difference?

I just got the H20 installed, but the dish (2 actually) don't look like that... Am I screwed when they start carrying my local HD feeds? (If they ever do, Springfield, MO I'm sure isn't a high priority)
