Three words: GPU assisted transcoding
You like taking your various video content and reencoding it to play on portable devices, DVD players, to take up less space etc. right? You probably don't like how long it takes. My poor cpu has spent hours converting The Chappelle Show to pocket editions, and that may all be a thing of the past. We've mentioned before what ATI's Avivo technology will bring to the table, but ExtremeTech has got an early look at their yet-to-be-released Avivo Transcode application (pictured). When paired with a compatible videocard it cut the time to convert video clips to an amazing 1/5 of the original.
You really like that don't you? So do I friend, so do I.

Now all they need to do is build this feature into a DVD ripping application or BitTorent so that while the film is downloading/ripping it's being converter on the fly.

Why didn't they do that years ago? Transcoding video always takes ages. Will the new software take HD into account? That's the important question. Transcoding HDV captures (example: HDV to WMVHD) on my AMD 4800 CPU takes 8 times the capture time. So even their 5 to 1 improvement means transcoding slower than real time. And what about SLI ? Don't these people want to sell more GPUs? What are they waiting for?
