60-inch SXRD set at 50-inch price
Normally,
I don't post much about deals on HDTVs, simply because we're not a
shopping service. I would consider myself a smart shopper and I love to
help spend other people's money with recommendations, but I typically
keep that separate from the blog. I'm crossing that line today and I
hope you'll forgive me. I think you will because this is a great deal
if you're lusting for an SXRD set from Sony.I've read the two reviews we've had here on the 50-inch SXRD and the set sounded fantastic. I actually got a first-hand look at the 60-incher at my local Tweeters earlier this week. The set does NOT disappoint and it lives up to the billing that Matt and Thom gave it in the 50-inch footprint. So, what's the deal? Well, at Tweeters, the 50-incher went for $3,999 and the 60-incher was $4,999.
I just checked tomorrow's ad circulars in my local paper (why can't I get my ads via RSS?) and Best Buy is offering both sets at the same price. I almost overlooked my Circuit City flyer because it was tucked into another section of the paper, but I am SO glad I found it. Starting tomorrow, Circuit City will offer the 60-inch set for the 50-inch price listed at Tweeters and Best Buy.
You read that right: starting tomorrow, CircuitCity will offer the KDSR60XBR1, the 60-inch SXRD from Sony for $3,999! Add to that a no interest financing deal until 2008 and you've got yourself a sweet set for a grand less; it's a 60-inch set at a 50-inch price. Hmm...maybe I won't renew the warranty on that 4-year old HDTV after all!

Sounds too good, some may call it bait and switch. Let us know if you could actually buy it for that price. I have a nice due bill from Best Buy for a $1600 42" LCD Sony that will never come due.

Is this a local deal or nationwide ? There is no SXRD in Circuit Citys online ad.
Kevin C. Tofel @ Oct 29th 2005 4:04PM
I believe this is a nationwide ad. This is the circular that comes in the Sunday paper and is posted up at every store.

Sony has a 'Minimium Advertised Price' policy. The low price at CC is a dead ringer for a typo. But 'Truth in Advertising' makes CC sell the sets at that price. Sony will just pull all co-op funds for the ad. Believe me, I have advertised with Sony for 16 years, the most they can do is pull ad $ away from CC. Grab a set if you can, Best Buy screwed up an ad for the 50A10 LCD set a few weeks back and was forced to take a huge profit cut with every set that was sold during that time. BB and CC are in businness to make money. Plain and simple. But cutting $1000 off the price is way more than they need to be appear aggressive. Someone at advert. division will have some 'slpaning' to do.

I went to CC and nowhere in their ad did I see the 60 for that price. Actually I didn't see any SXRD in their ad for that matter. What newspaper did this ad come in?
Kevin C. Tofel @ Oct 29th 2005 9:09PM
I got this flyer in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Have any readers from other cities seen this same ad? Maybe I'll snap a pic and upload...

tonytag: does that mean you're splittin' half of the savings with HD Beat??? :) Just kidding, glad this saved you a bundle and even happier that you got a killer HDTV!

It is an adverising mistake. I work for a local competitor and Sony had informed us that it is a mistake and not to take markdowns.

If you click on the CC ad online for the 60 inch SXRD, the next page shows a price of $4999 for the 60 inch version -- clearly a typo on the print version.
If you search for the TV on CC's website- the price is $4999. Is CC legally obligated to sell at $3999 for the duration of the ad's effective dates?

I picked up this TV today for $3999 at BB, after CC refused to honor the price! Just took in the CC flier from today's (Sunday) LA Times and BB matched it. I'd also gone to CC (on La Cienega and 18th here in LA), and they already had a little sign up in the store, right in front of the Sony saying basically that the price advertised in today's flier was a muck up and that they wouldn't be honoring the price and sorry for the inconvenience. Lame. I would advise that people give it a shot anyway. If you can get them to accept the $3999 price, I know CC also has some coupons out for 10% off any purchase over $300, so it would be possible to get the set for under $3600. But hey - I'm happy with my price. Thanks a lot to HD Beat, one of my new favorite web sites, happy that I happened to find you guys JUST THIS MORNING thanks to a link off of engadget! Cheers -mark x4

Sony might be reimbersing retailers, if it's at all big box stores it's probably a promotion through Sony.
tonytag @ Nov 8th 2005 11:00AM
I got th eflyer this morning and almost crapped my pants. Instead of going to CC however, i went to Best Buy to price match. Not only did they price match (-$1000) , but they gave me a 4 year warranty for $200 instead of $400. Took off shipping. Plus gave Me a $500 gift card! And $150 in rewards!!!! ALl in all I basically received $1650 in rebates and discounts/ gift cards!!!)

Was anyone able to purchase a 60" Sony SXRD at a Circuit City Store for the price they advertised last week of $3,999.99? Please let me know as I am looking for exceptions they have made for customers.
rodney soul @ Nov 16th 2005 12:22PM
I picked up my 60" SXRD for $4499 at Magnolia (to match Fry's price). I took the CC ad to Magnolia's since they have a price match for 60 days and they honored it.
I went in in good faith, then a day later someone told me it was a typo and CC was not honoring it. Oh well, got mine at $3999! ;P
