AMD outsells Intel for the month of September. Why? MCE PC's.
Who knew Media Center was so popular? Students stocking up to get ready for the 360?
Whatever the case may be, Media Center PC's accounted for nearly half of all
desktop sales last month during the back to school period. 55 percent
of those had AMD chips inside, the upshot of all this being that AMD
enjoyed 52% of the US retail market, the first time that has happened
for an entire month. Analysts are crediting it to AMD having their chips in the right place, multiple price points and configurations of the Media Center PC's. Hmmm while Intel is coming out in support of HD-DVD, AMD hasn't said anything of note about HDTV. Of course, their partnership with NVIDIA and their nForce 400 chipset is a large part of enabling their integration into Media Center PC's so we'll see how far that takes this recent surge.

The sad thing about this victory for AMD is the fact that Windows Media Center isn't available in a 64-bit version that would be more suitable for the AMD Athlon64 chip that is in a lot of these Media Center PCs.
