The picture quality is the same. The difference is that HDMI carries an audio signal as well. I know so many people rave about the fact that HDMI/DVI is a big improvement over the old component video analog connection.  The fact is, I don't buy into the hype!  I have tried connections with different levels of components and t.v's.  Very rarely, was a difference even noticeable!  As an example, I use a Denon DVD-5900 with a DVI out to my t.v. I think the picture is a bit sharper as opposed to the component connections.
